Our Family Weekend Getaway

A few of you have messaged and emailed me personally to ask for more details on our recent weekend getaway to Viamede Resort. So I wanted to dedicate a short post to elaborate more on our stay. For all you mamas looking for a family trip that doesn't require a lot of planning up front, this one's for you!

Viamede Resort

This was our first visit to the Kawartha Lakes Region and so grateful to have stayed at the historic and beautiful Viamede Resort off of Stoney Lake. I will start by saying this was a hidden gem and I can't believe I didn't know about this pet-friendly resort before! Over our 48-hour stay my entire family, dog included, enjoyed everything from swimming to hiking and fine dining to roasting marshmallows.

Our Weekend In a Nutshell

We arrived and settled in our cozy 1-bedroom cottage, but we were quickly rushed to the pool by our daughter who was eager to go for a dip! She was pleased to know she had the option of an outdoor pool, an indoor pool or the lake just steps away! We swam in all three, but made sure to make the 3:30 farm tour. I definitely recommend doing the tour as you will really get an idea of how passionate the people of Viamede are about providing fresh food to their guests.

We enjoyed our meals at the Boathouse Pub which overlooked the lake. The food was impressive as expected! Confession: I had the fish and chips, which was completely not my typical go-to meal, but it was one of the best I've ever had! The most memorable meal of the weekend was by far our 5-course meal at Mount Julian. My husband and I enjoyed some alone time since Viamede hosted a Pizza and Movie night for the kiddies. Mount Julian offered an intimate-setting and dishes that were unique and delicious. The wine-pairing option made for an even better date night, of course! Mount Julian is highly recommended, but make sure to time it with the kids night since children are not allowed. I should mention that my daughter couldn't have cared less as she had a blast making her own pizza and enjoying it afterwards.

Bonus Points ...

There are a few things that really stood out about our weekend that I want to point out because I know it's not always easy planning a weekend getaway for the family. It was so nice to get to Viamede and know that there is always a daily activity schedule for the kids. Whether it is a historic walk, an "ice cream social", or a bonfire party, there is something to do all day. Plus, there are board games for those moments you need a little downtime.

We also loved that the resort was pet friendly. We have a dog and he was thrilled that he could join us on our family weekend getaway. This is a big one for a lot of families, because I realize that it can sometimes be challenging or expensive to find a dog sitter or kennel.

Lastly, we loved that all of the water sports were free and always available. We went canoeing and kayaking ... this was definitely our workout for the weekend. It was not easy, but so much fun!

If you are looking for a simple weekend getaway out of the city without a ton of headache, Viamede is a great option. We will definitely be back!
