5 Realistic Fitness Goals You Can Put into Place Today

Don’t worry, you’re not alone when it comes to reflecting on some of the goals you set back in January only to realize many of them didn’t make it past February. Yikes! I’ve been in your shoes and know the feeling of disappointment, but here’s the thing: every new day is a chance to start over again. You don’t have to wait until New Year’s to put new resolutions in place. You can start today and make solid fitness goals that you can actually stick to. Here are 5 realistic goals that I am confident you can accomplish and feel good about.

Do Something Active Each Week That Makes You Happy

Let go of the “no pain, no gain” mentality and instead focus on doing something active each week that makes you smile. Mental fitness is what will build your foundation to long-term success when it comes to physical fitness. If doing a 15-minute yoga class or going for a nature hike calms your soul, prioritize just that this week. If you focus on the outcome - those happy hormones - this is sure to be a fitness goal you will be motivated to stick to!

Move More, Stress Less.

This has been my go-to motto lately because it’s something that I can easily come back to in my mind in any moment of stress. I remind myself that if I move my body, I will feel better and be able to think more clearly in difficult situations. If you find you need a moment to collect your thoughts, stand up and do a simple stretch. Take a few deep breaths or walk around the room before coming back to the situation. Movement works every time!

Show Yourself Some Love

This takes practice, but believe me the results are worth it. Every day make sure to pay yourself a compliment. If it’s easier for you, write down what you are grateful for in your life. You can find 10 of my favourite Gratitude Journal Prompts here if you need some help. But honestly, the more you love yourself, the more you will achieve. The mind is everything, so talk to yourself as you would talk to your best friend or child. Be kind and believe in yourself because if you don’t, no one else will!

Do One New Workout This Month

I love this goal because there is something about a new workout that gives your routine new life. I would suggest picking one day (just one to start this month) where you try out one new class (either in-person or virtually). This is a great way to challenge yourself and wake up some muscles you probably haven’t hit with your typical workouts. Here are my top picks for online fitness platforms if you’re looking for some inspo!

Remind Yourself of Your “Why” Every Single Day!

In my opinion, the best step to holding yourself accountable is to put meaning behind the goals you set. So if “working out 3x a week” is your goal, take a step back and ask yourself WHY do you want to work out. Is it to be stronger or is to be able to keep up with your kids? Always put your WHY at the forefront of your goal setting or else you will never feel motivated enough to actually achieve that goal!

I hope these help and never forget to celebrate your small wins! You got this!
